Storm-Water Bypass for Box Culvert Replacement

You went above and beyond from initially visiting the project and advising on pump power to making any changes that were needed. It was a relief that there was somebody around 24-7 to help out.

A construction company was contracted to replace a deteriorating concrete box culvert originally installed in 1929. The concrete boxes allowed stream water to flow underneath a residential roadway.

The project required a bypass solution to reconcile difficult project parameters and meet rollercoaster flow requirements. The stream constricts near the project dam location, causing water levels to rise quickly after even light rainfall. If stormwater breached the project’s dam, the fresh concrete for the new box culverts would not cure properly.

The contractor engaged E-Pump to configure a bypass system that could adjust to the variable flow requirements. With an accomplished record of similar bypass operations, E-Pump delivered a cost-effective and fail-safe stream bypass system designed to deliver over 20,000 gpm with no delay.
E-Pump’s innovative bypass system deployed a 12” vacuum-assisted rental pump to handle normal flows, along with three standby 10” vacuum-assisted pumps to respond to peak flow should water levels rise quickly. The primary 12” pump was set to operate within a specified water level range and the three 10” emergency backup pumps were set to operate automatically using a common float control.
The 10” pumps were also outfitted with specially designed Low-Profile High Volume suction strainers to keep the suction inlets submerged when water levels were minimal. This design ensured that suction lines remained filled with water and allowed the back-up system to move approximately 16,000 gpm on demand without loss of priming time for each pump.

E-Pump’s project design specialists and technical service crew worked together with contractor project engineers and site workers to deliver a calibrated bypass solution for a very satisfied client: “We’d like to thank you for all the outstanding service that E-Pump did for us. You went above and beyond from initially visiting the project and advising on pump power to making any changes that were needed. It was a relief that there was somebody around 24-7 to help out. Your team is top-notch in our book, and we are looking forward to working with you on many projects to come.”
